Diagnosing Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is the most common functional bowel disorder, affecting as many as 20% of the population. Yet accurate diagnosis may be elusive. Healthcare professionals often rely on patient reports of symptoms: abdominal pain or discomfort, chronic or recurrent diarrhea, and constipation—which are also common to other conditions such as inflammatory bowel diseases (ulcerative colitis or colitis and Crohn’s disease) and celiac disease.

Clinicians often approach IBS as a diagnosis of exclusion, performing many tests to exclude other diseases.  The average time for clinicians to diagnose IBS is three years. 

An Innovative Solution

PROMETHEUS^® IBS Diagnostic is the first blood test for IBS. Using Smart Diagnostic Algorithm pattern recognition technology to improve predictive accuracy, the test assesses the expression of 10 biomarkers that are related to the pathophysiology pathways implicated in IBS.  Prometheus recommends that this test be used along with other standard tests that are run on patients in which IBS is suspected. The information provided in the test report should complement the physicians’ diagnostic evaluation and may help validate other diagnostic findings.
